Interview

Muid Latif
"Besides studying on ancient South East Asian history, culture and arts, a lot of my works are inspired by elements around me such as floral and decorative patterns, plus by my travelling locally and overseas."
Tell us something about where you come from.
I come from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

List 5 words that describe you.
Friendly, Outgoing, Creative, Generous and Supportive.

Who are some people you admire?
There's a lot of people who had inspired me, from local to international artists like Noor Mahmood, Jai, Tan Jin Ho, Shieko, Yazid, to Darbotz, Amenth, Drew Europeo, Joshua Davis, Niko Stumpo, John Leigh, Mike Young, Adhemas and photographers like Michael Muller & Danielle Levitt.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Besides studying on ancient South East Asian history, culture and arts, a lot of my works are inspired by elements around me such as floral and decorative patterns, plus by my travelling from places to places local and overseas.

How would you describe your work?
I like to be multi-discipline in the works that I produce, however my main focus is to explore, experiment and promote oriental arts in my artwork and designs, with organic elements and patterns originated from South East Asia like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia. I had applied these not only through my personal artwork, it also includes commercial interactive media like TV and websites and last but not least in street art / graffiti.

List your 3 favourite things.
Sketching, Graphic Editing and watching DVD's from anime to cool independent films.

What do you do for fun?
I like to do photography. Most of my times these days is trying to catch up old and new friends from online social networking like myspace.com and facebook.com, and I like to buy collectables action figures like Transformers.

What's the most essential item in your creative process?
I basically start my work with few sketches, mostly came from the Web or books from the library I go to, later scanned and edited in Photoshop or illustrator. I will explore and experiment with the right warm to cool colours before I arranged my work to create more impact. Passion is a must along music to get you in the mood.

What are you working on at the moment?
I just created my first artwork early January and planning to complete another 2 out of 3 artwork for the series called 'Seri Stereoflorastica', and few more for my oriental art series. Right now, my Oriental Art Series is 8 in total and plan to complete 12 artworks all together.

Do you have a career highlight?
I had few acknowledgement and publicity about my work in local and international, namely featured in design portals like Netdiver.net, Coolhomepages.com and magazines like Territory, Web Design Index and Computer Arts. I was the 6th & 8th Philippines Web Awards honourable Final Judges and currently a board member of Creative Commons Malaysia.

What's the next thing on the cards for you and your Art?
I'm planning on doing a solo exhibition probably by Mid of 2008. I would like to bring my solo exhibition outside Malaysia and hopefully to be more active in the scene compared to last two years.

Any big plans?
Will participate in more local and international exhibition, submit more artworks in e-magazine and probably working on clothing line what features my oriental art and designs.
